Tania Flack - Naturopath Nutritionist

Tania Flack - Naturopath Nutritionist Tania Flack Naturopath NutritionistPosted September 29, 2017, by Jenny Sakr For 17 years Tania has been working as a naturopath and nutritionist, sharing her love of good health and a natural lifestyle with many clients along the way. Her biggest achievement came in 2015 when she opened the doors to her very own clinic,Bondi Health and Wellness. Read more about her story here...What did you study and what are the steps you took to become a naturopath and nutritionist?I graduated from the Australian College of Natural Medicine, and have a Bachelor of Health Science, an Advanced Diploma of Health Science in Naturopathy, Diploma of Herbal Medicine, a Diploma of Nutrition and additional qualifications in natural fertility management. What did you want to be when you were younger?I loved spending time in nature when I was growing up and was lucky to have the influence of several generations of women in my family who took an active interest in how pl ants and food helped support good health. I still have books on herbal medicine and natural health from my Grandmother and Great Grandmother and I like to think that their influence encouraged me into this career path. What was your first job?I had several part-time jobs when I was younger including fashion, office work and hospitality and I soon realised they were not right for me.When did you first know you wanted to be a naturopath and what inspired you? After a few false departures trying out different industries I eventually trained as a remedial therapist, which I loved and I spent many years developing a busy practice focusing on sports medicine. One of the women I worked with was studying natural medicine and that really opened my eyes to the possibility for future studies.Explain a typical day at workI am a super early riser, so Im usually in the clinic by 7 am. I use this time to review my patient notes for the coming day and keep up to date with business paperwork. I start consulting at 9 am and have appointments through to 5 pm. Its always busy and fast-paced in the clinic. I work a seven-day fortnight and when I am not consulting I write health articles for Nature Health magazine, work on my online programs, develop new recipes, keep up to date with professional development and seminars.Whats the most interesting thing thats happened to you in your career?Perhaps the most exciting thing that has happened in my career is the level of access we now have to integrative pathology, especially DNA testing for wellness genomics and gut microbiome testing, which is a special passion of mine. This provides me with an in-depth view of peoples health and allows me to not only help them feel better in the short term, but to really develop cutting-edge preventative, proactive health care strategies that I know will make a significant difference to their long-term health. My industry has changed significantly in the belastung 17 years and I feel very grateful t hat I got on board early, as I really see natural medicine taking its place amongst other health careers as an important part of a wider health care system.Name the best and worst parts of your jobThe best part of my career is that you never stop learning. There is a wealth of research that impacts my industry being released every day, so youre never bored. The worst part is trying to carve up my time between practice and my other commitments, there never seems to be enough time in the day.Whats the most important career tip someone has given you?Perhaps the best career tip I have been given is to surround yourself with people whose skill set compliment your own and to outsource any areas that you are not strong in. In my case finding a great web development team made all the difference to business. What do you wish someone had told you before starting your own small business?I had to learn my business skills on the job, which led to some bumpy times in the early days. I wish someone had recommended that I get a good grounding in basic business skills along with my degree. It would have made difference to the first few years in business.Where do people have to start to get into this field and what is a standard salary for this role?Several institutions offer degree qualifications in natural medicine, which is the starting point to get into the industry. From there graduates have several options open to them. Ideally, if they chose to go into private practice they look to work with an experienced practitioner with for the first 5-10 years in order to gain clinical experience. The salary depends on how hard you want to work, most naturopaths are self-employed so there is a wide variety in earnings. Earnings usually start low for new graduates, but a busy practitioner can comfortably earn a good income, once established.Name a career highlightI would have to say opening Bondi Health Wellness after many years of working from other clinics was a highlight. I am rea lly happy with the way the clinic has developed and its a lovely place for people to come to.Whats next for you?My major project for the next couple of years is to focus on developing my online nutrition programs in order to spread information on natural health far and wide.Tell us what life outside the clinic is like for youI have a passion for travel and love learning about other cultures. One of the draw cards of my industry is that being self-employed allows me to travel. I am an animal lover and share and we share our home with a two Italian Greyhounds and four happy chickens, so its organic eggs for breakfast on the weekends.Connect with Tania on Web https//www.taniaflack.com/ Facebookhttps//www.facebook.com/taniaflack.naturopath LinkedInhttps//www.linkedin.com/in/taniaflack/Inspired by Tanias story? The Words all Professional Resume Writers Hate to Hear

The Words all Professional Resume Writers Hate to Hear The Words all Professional Resume Writers Hate to Hear Checking my email one day this week, I found one that started in a way destined to make my heart sinkI know we finalized this resume a while ago, but I showed it to a friend and he had some comments My heart doesnt sink because of the extra work I dont mind that if the comments are helpful but because I know that they probably wont be. So I now have two choices. 1) Make changes that will be detrimental to the document I worked so hard on creating or 2) get into lengthy explanations about why my clients friend is mistaken. (I always go for the second option because I cant bear to do bad things to someones resume).Look, Im not (always) perfect. Sometimes there is a suggestion that improves what I already did. But the document I created welches pretty carefully thought through. There were reasons for every decision. There was thought behind each word choice. I left things out. I rearranged information. I created a central theme and then built on it. Then together, the client and I refined the document to iron out inaccuracies, or add missing information. That resume was a little symphony each part adding up to the whole in a coordinated and carefully planned manner. But now, because some guy has it in his head that resumes should only be one page long, or that you shouldnt start bullet points with action verbs, I have to address each of his comments.Im not really complaining its a pretty rare occurrence and my client was very receptive to my answers, but it makes me wonder whether people in other professions have this same experience. Do doctors have people call and say I know you think I should have an ultrasound, but I talked to my moms friend who used to be a doctors receptionist, and she thinks Im fine? Do accountants have people question their tax calculations because my friend is really good at math and he thinks you got it wrong?Maybe they do. O r maybe the problem is the lack of understanding about what a professional resume writer actually does. I am always amazed how many people think my job is simply to type up their career history and make it look neat. And frankly, why would they know any different? While ur industry has several professional associations, none of them have raised the profile of our industry. None of them have coordinated PR and marketing efforts to let people know what we do, or promoted stringent criteria for membership that tells clients who they can trust. We have some certifications handed out by various groups, but frankly I cant remember the last time a client asked about them.Very few people know what we do and very few people understand why its important. The value of our work is only really understood by most people after they use our services and get a great new job as a result. Is that the reason why some people are willing to hand over hundreds of dollars to a professional, only to put more stock in the comments of a friend or relative? Or is there some other explanation?

9 Resume Tips Hiring Managers Wished Creative Pros Knew

9 Resume Tips Hiring Managers Wished Creative Pros Knew9 Resume Tips Hiring Managers Wished Creative Pros KnewRecruiters from advertising and Web absatzwirtschaft agencies share their advice for would-be job seekers applying for positions in creative fields. They send their resumes in pizza boxes. They send in construction boots with notes about getting a foot in the door. They send in resumes with black backgrounds and white text that make hiring managers eyeballs buzz.Maybe once, far away and long ago, behauptung were cutting-edge ways for creative professionals like artists, designers, marketing executives and writers to grab the attention of hiring managers. Now theyre just desperate pleas. Ladders spoke to managers who hire creatives to find out what catches their attention, what arouses their sympathy and what disturbs them.1. Restrain yourselfIts natural for creative professionals to present artistic cover letters, resumes and portfolios. While the creative rendition of these mat erials is of course relevant for creative positions, creative types must bear in mind that the first person who reviews a resume is often not a designer. What might be real edgy and innovative to you, the designer, can be seen as too far out or unprofessional to the non-designer, said Mary Ann Henker, a recruiter for the ad agency The Henker Group. Hence, the overall package must speak to the fact that youre a solid designer who also understands that youre submitting a geschftlicher umgang document that will be reviewed potentially by a non-designer and (is) easy to read. In other words, save the black background and white text for another project, not your resume.2. Show tangiblesOut of hundreds of creative resumes Henker reviews, only a handful include information that shows a given creative pro understands business and can orchestrate success for a potential employer. Your resume will stand out if you can project that you also have a business side to your creative thinking. Henke r recommends that job seekers include numbers, percentages and dollar amounts relating to growth or size and communicate this information in business short-hand to illustrate that you truly can speak business. Her examples Your recommendations on a fall print campaign saved a client 18 percent in paper costs, or a product advertising campaign increased company sales 12 percent during Q1 of FY 09.3. Compress your filesHenker said that nearly all designers submit portfolios on their own or in response to a position submission requirement. Of those, a startling number fail to reduce image files or compress JPEGs or PDFs. We as recruiters are not expecting to review high-resolution portfolios at this stage, Henker said. Please reduce image files and compress when you can. Its a red flag to us when a designer tries to e-mail through a portfolio that is 12MB, an extremely large size for an e-mail attachment. It usually promotes a response, ?Does this person know the basics of compressing or reducing a file size? Of course all designers know how to do this but it prompts us to think, ?This person doesnt understand the end user of the documents she is sending. 4. Avoid clutterHenker suggested that for online portfolios, creative professionals should remember that what can be highly artistic and edgy to a designer might be seen as cluttered and hard to navigate to the non-designer. She discards online portfolios all the time because theyre so difficult to navigate and cited factors such as an over-reliance on Flash multimedia that make pages load slowly or the fact that a portfolio lacks specific samples appropriate to the position.5. Have a job-specific portfolio pageTo show that you have relevant experience for a given job, put up a site that has a portfolio page specific for job applications, Henker suggested. It will demonstrate that you understand what type of portfolio pieces a given employer would like to see.6. Dont offendHenker has seen portfolio pieces that r ange from disturbing to pornographic. Be mindful that what is considered art could be offensive to the viewer, she said. Art is supposed to evoke emotion and it is a honed skill however, be mindful of not aiming for shock value when deciding which pieces to put in your portfolio. Save the blood, guts, disturbing and XXX images till after you get the job You dont want the person reviewing your resume and portfolio to overlook what could be great credentials by perceived inappropriate images by the reviewer.7. List design awardsDont be bashful here, Henker said. Design awards are a testament in a highly competitive field. Awards let your resume reader know that your resume is worth spending time with to determine if youre a good match for a position.8. Show that you can work to deadlineKelley Rexroad, a career coach and consultant, noted that people are hired for their creative talent and fired for their inability to create relationships and alliances, many times because of poor commu nication. She says that the best thing a creative pro can have on his resume and cover letter is proof that he can work to a deadline. It is a flaw I have seen over and over - ?I cant be creative on the spot, Rexroad said. He doesnt reply to the call for the deadline, thinking no response is a response. Next thing you know, it is a performance issue. Having the words on the resume and/or cover letter and the examples to share in an interview will make a difference.9. Show your stuff onlineAnd then theres the K.I.S.S. aproach Keep It Simple, Stupid said Phil Tadros of the Web marketing agency Doejo. Appropriately enough, he delivered his advice in a two-line message All you need is a simple hello one-liner and a link to your work, he said. If you dont have your s**t together online under one link, then I dont want you to work for me.

Women who have paying jobs will have better memory later in life

Women who have paying jobs will have better memory later in life Women who have paying jobs will have better memory later in life It’s another win for women in the workplace. Having a job â€" that pays â€" may guard against memory loss and reduce dementia risk later in life, new research shows.“Though preliminary, our research provides evidence that participation in the paid labor force may help prevent late-life memory decline among women in the United States,” said lead researcher Elizabeth Rose Mayeda, an assistant professor of epidemiology at UCLA’s Fielding School of Public Health, in a release.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!“Possible pathways include mental stimulation, financial benefits, and social benefits.”Mayeda presented her preliminary findings earlier this week at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference in Los Angeles.  Women make up two-thirds of all those affected with Alzheimer’s.Mayeda and her team studied 6,386 women born between 1935 and 1956 in the He alth and Retirement Study.Women in the study reported their paid employment, marital and parental status between ages 16 and 50. Their memory performance was measured every two years, using standardized tests, after the age of 50. One test, for example, asked participants to memorize a list of words after hearing them.It pays to workResearchers found that the women in the study who participated in the paid labor force between early adulthood and middle age (including mothers and non-mothers) experienced slower memory decline in late life. On the other side, the rate of memory loss was fastest among women who did not engage in paid work.Clearly, it pays off â€" cognitively â€" to work. Compared to married mothers who participated in the workforce, the average memory performance between ages 60 and 70 years declined 61% faster for married women with children who never took on paid work. Average memory performance declined 83% faster for women who had a prolonged period of single mothe rhood where they didn’t work for pay.Still, as Mayeda told the Washington Post, the results of this study do not have to be “bad news for stay-at-home moms.”In the future, Mayeda said, research should evaluate policies or programs that encourage women’s participation in the workplace. She also suggested to CNN that it was possible working in mid-life could be “protective” against memory loss and ultimately, Alzheimer’s.

13 Ways the Busiest People Ever Avoid Burnout

13 Ways the Busiest People Ever Avoid Burnout 13 Ways the Busiest People Ever Avoid Burnout Sure, you love your job. After all, you wouldn't be doing it if you didn't. But after years of email upon email and never-ending phone conferences, even the best of us can face burnout. To find out how to successfully combat- even avoid- this phenomenon, we asked 13 startup founders from the Young Entrepreneur Council (a.k.a., the hardest-working people we know) what strategies they rely on. Here's what they had to say. 1. Take a Vacation and Fully Unplug Vacations with loved ones will help entrepreneurs avoid burnout. It's important to put on an out-of-office message, too, and not respond to emails. Another benefit of taking a vacation is you set a good example for hard-working employees. - Jesse Pujji, Ampush 2. Forget Balance, Find Harmony I think people who say it’s all about work-life balance are wrong. I value finding passion and harmony in my work by being connected to and caring about my team and my customers and making a big difference in their lives. I would burn out way faster working five hours a day at a job that was hurting my soul than I would working 15 hours a day at a job that's feeding my soul. - Dan Price, Gravity Payments 3. Know Your Breaking Point I think most entrepreneurs will tell you it's impossible to unplug- so burnout is almost inevitable. However, it's important to know when you're close to or at a burnout stage. Something as simple as taking a day off, going for a bike ride, or having a fun night out with friends can help to take the edge off. - Pablo Palatnik, ShadesDaddy.com 4. Fill Your Day With Joy Our business works to fill our people's day with what they love. When work feels like a job, we redirect those tasks to someone who loves them. Not a great organizer? We have a team member who is. Hate numbers? We've got someone who loves them. We are fueled with so much joy that we have a term around the company called the 'joy hangover.' When work is such a blast, burnout doesn't exist. - Corey Blake, Round Table Companies 5. Schedule Free Time Schedule free time on your calendar, just like you would schedule a meeting, and stick to it. It's crucial to take the time you need for yourself, even if it's just 30 minutes a day. You'll get back to work feeling recharged and inspired, and chances are, you'll accomplish a lot more than you would if you worked straight through the day. - Evrim Oralkan, Travertine Mart 6. Travel and Change Your Environment Traveling is the best way to avoid burnout. Take your laptop and spend one to two months working from somewhere else, preferably internationally. With the internet and cloud tools like Dropbox and Skype, there's very little that can't be done from abroad. The change in environment sparks your creativity and allows you to bring new energy into your work. - Leah Neaderthal, Start Somewhere 7. Pursue Your Passion Starting a business is a time-consuming endeavor that doesn't end once things start to take off. On the contrary, the more successful you are, the more time you will be asked to contribute toward your enterprise. That’s why it’s important you focus your time and energy on doing something you enjoy and are passionate about. - Lane Campbell, Syntress 8. Take a Nap Naps are not just for children. Instead of having a second cup of coffee, sleep for 20 minutes. It's the best way to refresh the brain. - Jonathan Swerdlin, Fdbk 9. Work Out When I feel so mentally burnt out from juggling multiple projects, there's only one thing that can recharge my brain and my enthusiasm- working out. It's a way to unplug and just focus on the task in front of me, whether I go for a long run or a four-hour bike ride around my city. When I'm done, I have a high so powerful that all of the stress from my day-to-day activities is gone. - Andrew Vest, Preferling 10. Live With Mindfulness Personally, I find the best way to avoid burnout is to have an ongoing focus on mindfulness rather than only when on breaks and vacations. Find ways to detach during the week in a way that works for you. Yoga and exercise work for some, while meditation works for others. Be mindful of those moments. Try to take consistent mini-breaks throughout the week to detach and re-center. - Andrew Thomas, SkyBell Technologies, Inc. 11. Find a Hobby The best way to avoid burnout is to find a hobby you can deeply immerse yourself in for a few hours a week. I play ultimate frisbee, and when I'm on the field, I'm definitely not thinking about my company. Hobbies (such as basketball, ceramics, and climbing) can provide a therapeutic release, and you can come to work recharged and ready to go every day! - Bhavin Parikh, Magoosh, Inc. 12. Build a Great Team I used to think vacations would recharge me, but I would just come back to piles of work. In the last year, we've built our team to eight people. The quantity doesn't matter- the key is that it's a strong team. I know that whether I'm working or not, great things are being done. Feeling the support from all sides has been critical to my personal happiness. - Aaron Schwartz, Modify Watches 13. Meditate Daily Even if it's just for 10 minutes, spending the time (especially in the early afternoon) to just breathe has been extraordinarily powerful for me. It keeps me fresh and sharp, and taking self-care seriously sets a great example for the rest of the team. - Derek Flanzraich, Greatist Photo of stressed out woman courtesy of Shutterstock.

How to Communicate Better with Other Departments - The Muse

How to Communicate Better with Other Departments - The Muse How to Communicate Better with Other Departments Does your workplace feel a little like Congress lately? Is everyone working for his or her own team and not for the collective betterment of the company? Are you having trouble reaching across the aisle to get the information you need to do your job well- or at all? Although nonprofit employees are united by the mission of their organizations, I’ve found that these issues plague nonprofits as much as they do any other type of company. While we may have one end result in mind, we’re easily divided by our functions and how we fulfill that mission. The most frequent clash in the nonprofit world is between program staff and fundraising staff. Program employees often accuse fundraisers of focusing on money over mission, misrepresenting the organization’s work, or exploiting clients. On the flip side, fundraisers get frustrated when program staff don’t key them in on important developments, making it hard for them to raise the money necessary for the programs to function. Add in the fact that nonprofits are perpetually understaffed, and you have a stressed and overwhelmed staff- which can lead to snappish behavior and ineffective fundraising and program development. Whether you’re also part of a nonprofit or your company is simply divided into invisible silos that can’t seem to play nice, here are a few of my best tips to bury the hatchet with your co-workers and figure out how to communicate better. 1. Clarify Your Role This seems basic, but it’s likely the root of many of your problems. In my situation, as a fundraiser, I expect that all staff- no matter their designated roles- will participate in fundraising at some level. However, if they’ve never had to do that in a previous role or don’t fully understand why I’m making the request, I’ll often encounter some resistance. To smooth things over, I explain what I need and why I need it. Otherwise, to people who don’t have a lot of experience with my function, it looks like I’m asking them to do my job for me. Also, it’s often helpful to clearly state how your role can help them in return. For instance, as someone who regularly communicates with funders, I explain what my organization does and how we do it on a daily basis. I also meet with foundations that support several other nonprofits in our field and have a sense of best practices. This makes me a perfect participant in any program planning meeting, especially if the leader is concerned about whether or not a new program can get funded. Once your co-workers know exactly what you need from them to fulfill your role and how you can help them in return, you’ll find that communication and collaboration becomes much easier. 2. Attend the Other Side’s Meetings Honestly, the biggest communication problem in many organizations is often that we aren’t actually communicating with each other! Now, I know that no one needs another event on the calendar, but if you’ve noticed a breakdown in collaboration or communication between departments, maybe it’s time to drop in on the other side’s regular meetings. That way, they don’t have to take notes, type them up, and send them to you (which you’ll probably never read anyway). Instead, by being present, you can interpret the information immediately. I love having my colleagues sit in on fundraising meetings- they often have great ideas or feedback on issues that my department is facing. Sometimes the agenda is as simple as a program update, but occasionally, someone from another department will suggest a completely new way to think about a project- which means a new way to fundraise for it, too. These meetings also allow you to better understand your colleagues’ challenges. If you think they’re being ridiculous for hounding you for certain information or lazy for not addressing what you think is a stellar idea, that may change when you start to understand their entire strategy or when you discover how much work goes into one of their projects. 3. Planning is Power In my organization, the most friction between staff arises over schedules and expectations. Fundraising employees are in charge of managing proposals and reporting deadlines to foundations, and sometimes those deadlines require pretty ridiculous turnaround times. If program employees are caught off guard by those deadlines to collect and analyze the necessary data, they can- understandably so- become frustrated and stressed. And sometimes, because of the complexity of the data and information needed, it may be impossible to turn it around in that timeframe. If that’s the case, the fundraising staff can negotiate and set different expectations with the funders, but they, too, need time to do that- meaning the programming staff can’t wait until the last minute to request an extension. Depending on your organization, something as simple as setting up a shared calendar can help you communicate internal and external deadlines. It's also not a bad idea to address any concerns right when they pop up, like when a grant confirmation letter arrives, so the fundraising staff has more time to negotiate or the whole team can work together to create a plan B. As much as email, mobile phones, and the internet have helped us keep in touch, effective communication remains a challenge for every workplace. At the end of the day, remember that you’re all in it together and that your success depends on everyone doing their job well. (And if all else fails, listen to Otis and try a little tenderness.)

Millennials parents just wont stop getting involved in their kids jobs

Millennials' parents just won't stop getting involved in their kids' jobs Millennials' parents just won't stop getting involved in their kids' jobs When Millennials’ parents aren’t busy evicting their 30-year-old sons from their houses, it seems they’re busy pestering their kids’ bosses. Parents: This is a bad idea. We’ve heard it over and over and over and over. The helicopter parents who raised the Millennial generation first headed to college with them to pester professors and roommates. Now, they won’t stop inserting themselves into job searches, problems at work, and even firings.Ask a Manager’s Alison Green  - who hears perhaps more than anyone else from the trenches of the modern workplace - dives into the problem in a post over at Slate…Some parents are guilty of the minor sin of simply giving bad advice. Like those of this letter writer:My parents still push me hardcore to job search by walking around to buildings with an armload of cookie-cutter resumes that list every job I’ve ever had (even my high school laundromat job from over ten years ago; I’m a VFX artist now), shove it at the receptionist, ask to speak to the hiring manager right then and there and if they tell me s/he’s busy, say “no problem, I’ll wait” and then just awkwardly loiter in their lobby until I am presented with the hiring manager- or much more likely if I ever tried this, forcibly removed.Yeah, bad idea. But others are much, much worse. Like this mom who is TWEETING AT HER KIDS’ POTENTIAL EMPLOYERS:My mum is insisting that the way to get a job is through social media … She’s tweeting companies in our area to tell them I’m looking for a job and asking if they have any vacancies. It’s very embarrassing. She’s tweeting them my full name, my age, location and the type of work I’m looking for. I’ve asked her to stop so many times, but she downright refuses and keeps doing it.Yikes.Managers are fed up, like this guy:I have frequently had young employees’ parents contacting me to call in sick for their child or to ask me why their child has been terminated/ask me to re-hire their child . I am absolutely frustrated with this.Green has some pointers for the “kids” (so to speak - these are actually, technically ADULTS) mortified by their parents’ behavior. But there may be no script on earth that could undo the damage here. So, kids, do what you can. Apologize profusely and get your parents to knock it out.And parents: Do. Not. Do. This.

Why to Stop Comparing Yourself to Others at Work - The Muse

Why to Stop Comparing Yourself to Others at Work - The Muse Why to Stop Comparing Yourself to Others at Work My team’s really good about asking each other questions. We’re not a shy or arrogant bunch, and so we regularly turn to each other for help with little things like how to easily move a row in a spreadsheet without ruining the formatting; and big things, such as seeking direction on a half-baked article idea. I don’t always know the best way to approach social media marketing, but I trust that one of my co-workers will come to the rescue. And I’m always happy to chime in when a colleague asks a grammar question. I didn’t always work in groups that were so willing to offer a hand, or flat-out this-is-how-you-do-this instructions. Frankly, I was rarely comfortable relying on others’ expertise. That would mean admitting I didn’t have all of the answers, that I didn’t know how to do everything, that I wasn’t (gulp) good at everything. But obviously I didn’t and wasn’t. I’m proud of the skills I have, yet I fully recognize that everyone I work with has strengths that I simply do not have. In a recent article, bestselling author, Seth Godin offers this little nugget of truth: Everyone is better than you are...(at something). Which makes it imperative that you connect and ask for help. And he offers it as a positive because it’s in recognizing your limitations that gives you a reason to connect with others. And sometimes we need a reason to forge a connection and, moreover, increase our self-awareness. The beauty of collaborating is that it gives us an opportunity to share what we know and learn from what others know. If you could do it all- better than everyone around you- you wouldn’t need collaboration; you wouldn’t need anyone. There’d be no exhilarating brainstorming sessions or productive learning periods that emerge from recognizing that you alone aren’t enough. If you can accept that you’re not the be-all end-all in every aspect of your job, you’ll be better because of it. If you can quit comparing yourself to others, you’ll probably be happier and less stressed. You’ll grow not in spite of this awareness, but because of it. So own the things you excel in, relish your expertise even. But know that it’s OK, and even expected that someone else will fill in the gaps. When companies talk about wanting team players, I’m pretty comfortable saying that this is what they’re referring to. You’d do well then to adopt the attitude and understanding that current (or future) co-workers are going to be better at something than you are. Period.

5 Weeks to a New You Your Job-Search Makeover

5 Weeks to a New You Your Job-Search Makeover 5 Weeks to a New You Your Job-Search Makeover Set yourself up for success with a job-search makeover before the summer takes over.  Awhile back I wrote a series of five articles called “New Year, New You”  to help those of you who’ve asked me what you could be doing to improve your odds for success in the job search. At that time I spoke about mobilizing your job search. Writing a Good Resume When You Have an Employment Gap

Writing a Good Resume When You Have an Employment Gap Writing a Good Resume When You Have an Employment Gap Just because you have a period when you were unemployed doesn’t mean you can’t produce an effective resume. In today’s world, employers know you could have been out of work for a number of reasons through no fault of your own, such as a company downsizing or restructuring. Whatever caused your employment gap, writing a good resume in this situation means thinking strategically. Follow these three steps so that the next hiring manager’s focus is on your unique qualifications. Use a hybrid resume A hybrid resume - a combination of a chronological and functional resume - is the way to go when you have an employment gap. On a hybrid resume, first list your most important qualifications related to the position you’re applying for. Also, include work-related accomplishments you’ve earned along the way. Then, underneath, list your recent positions in reverse chronological order. As you can see, the hybrid resume allows you to get your potential employer’s attention right off the bat since he can focus on what you can bring to the position instead of seeing a work history with holes in it. Note how you filled the gap You may not have been employed full-time, but employers still want to know what you did to remain professionally active and engaged. In addition to listing previous positions in your work history, include non-work-related activities in which you gained professional skills. Did you freelance, volunteer or take classes? If so, list them along with your previous positions. Include as much information as you can, such as the dates, location and a short description of what was involved. Anticipate questions with your cover letter A cover letter is important part of writing a good resume but especially so with one that includes an employment gap. Anticipate questions your potential employer will have and explain them in your cover letter. Don’t sound defensive or apologetic. Just address your gap in employment and mention what you did to remain active during the time. Coupled with a hybrid resume, a good cover letter puts your potential employer’s focus where it should be: Why you’re the right person for the job. What do you think is the best way to address employment gaps when you’re writing a good resume? Let us know in the comments section. 12 Questions to Ask Yourself When Writing Your Résumé

12 Questions to Ask Yourself When Writing Your Résumé 12 Questions to Ask Yourself When Writing Your Résumé Writing a résumé can be a daunting task. It has a style unlike virtually any other document you are likely to write. Consequently, many people rely on either preconceived ideas or stock templates when setting down their credentials for a new position, dooming themselves to a mediocre product from the get-go.We often carry around outdated concepts when we don’t keep up to date with current trends. Today’s quality résumés have dispensed with objective statements, and must contain far more information about your accomplishments than your responsibilities. To stand out from the competition you must convey your personal brand, highlight your skills and explain the results of your work. And at the same time, your résumé should be formatted to be applicant tracking system (ATS) friendly.Rather than just trying to initially compose a document in résumé format, it is often very helpful to first create a background document you might think of as a well of information from which to draw. To get organized, begin by creating topic headings for each of the sections of the résumé: Professional Experience, Skills, Education, Certifications Training, Volunteer / Community Activities.Compose bullet points where you highlight each of your major accomplishments. And fill them in with a longhand version of what you did, how you did it and what happened because of your activity.  Don’t worry about conforming to the space limitation of a page or two in this private document. Just pour out your story on to several pages, and then you will be able to cull the highlights for your finished product. Moreover, having thought about and articulated your experiences you will also have taken an important step forward in preparing stories to tell when you get to interviewing for coveted roles. In each section or bullet point of your résumé well, answer these questions as best you can:1. How did you get this job? What does the company do? Who buys its products or services?2. Wh at are your major responsibilities? What have been the biggest challenges you faced in accomplishing them? What did you do, and how did it turn out? What resulted from your actions?3. What are you most proud to have accomplished in this role?4. How have you saved your employer time or increased productivity?5. What have you done, to increase sales or revenue for your employer? How did you go about doing it? What tools, skills, knowledge or software did you utilize?6. What have you done, and how did you do it, to decrease costs or expenses for your employer? Again, what tools, skills, knowledge or software did you utilize?7. How have your accomplishments in this role stacked up against others in your department, company or industry?8. Why is your employer better off because you were hired?9. What did you start or set up that became a model for others to copy in other locations or companies?10. How did you make life easier for your boss, your peers or others with whom you worked?11. H ow are you viewed by your boss, peers and those you supervise?  12. What is your reputation among your vendors, customers or clients? Why do they have this opinion of you?Your résumé well will likely turn out to be several pages long. Then, you can draw from it the main substance and ideas that emerge from your self-reflection.  Once you've completed this preliminary document and are ready to write the résumé itself, determine for yourself the overall impression of what you want to create in the mind of your reader. With this in mind, go back to highlight all the things that you’ve written that will contribute to someone coming to the conclusion you seek. Now you are well underway to figuring out what to include in the bullet points you will be fashioning.Bear in mind, employers are ultimately far less concerned about reading a listing of your current and former job descriptions than coming to understand how you have fulfilled your responsibilities in a way that sets you apart from everyone else. That is why each bullet point should be in what professional résumé writers call a STAR format that conveys succinctly your Situation, Task, Action and Results. When you go about the task of résumé creation this way, you will create a document that will interest its readers to invest far more than the six to 10 seconds they give to your competition.Happy hunting!
